You can watch the full interview or read about it below.
Jay: Hey, and thanks for joining us today. I’m Jay Flynn, Director of the Homes for Heroes Foundation. I’m joined today by Jessica Lannon, Michigan Nurses Foundation Executive Director, and Ted McTaggart, MNF board member, and Homes for Heroes real estate specialist, Jamie Tolosa. It’s my honor to be with you all today.
So Jessica and Ted, the Homes for Heroes Circle of Giving and the Homes for Heroes Foundation provide grants to nonprofits whose mission is to serve our heroes in need. Jamie and I are honored to present this $5,000 Homes for Heroes Foundation grant check to the Michigan Nurses Foundation.
Let’s take a few minutes to talk about the Michigan Nurses Foundation and all the things you are doing. I see you were founded in the year 2000. Jessica, please tell us how you have grown over the last 24 years.
Jessica: Yeah, we started out as a small foundation of nurses taking care of nurses. Meaning, nurses were funding scholarships for new nurses, and recovery grants for nurses struggling with mental health and substance abuse. Since then we’ve grown, and now the community members are donating, so we’re able to offer more.
Most recently, we received a state grant. And definitely with this Homes for Heroes Foundation grant, we make sure to get the money into the hands of those that need it. That means nurses that are currently struggling with mental health and substance abuse.
Jay: That’s great to hear! Jamie, you know the Homes for Heroes Circle of Giving is driven by the work that you and our colleagues across the nation do. Working with our hero groups at Home for Heroes, I know you’re a huge supporter of heroes, but what is it about this group that means a little bit more to you?
Jamie: Nurses in general are near and dear to my heart. My daughter is a nurse. She’s my oldest. Every day after she’s done working, she has a need to decompress. So, I see a little bit of the inside look of what nurses go through. And, I know the mental aspect is a big part of the profession, and you guys, you’re amazing for helping.
You’re amazing at what you do. You’re taking care of my kiddo! That means a lot to me.
Jay: We’re honored at the Home of Heroes Foundation to support you guys with this $5,000 grant.
Jessica, you kind of touched on it, but please tell us a bit more about how these funds are going to be used to support our nursing heroes?
Ted: A big part of what we do is recovery grants. They help keep nurses at the bedside, or bring nurses back to the bedside if they’re struggling to overcome substance use or other mental health issues. That’s the primary use.
We also do some work toward helping nurses to pursue more advanced degrees. This helps certain nursing students get through nursing school to become nurses.
So we’re helping to bring new nurses into the profession, and helping to keep working nurses at the bedside if they’re struggling.
This money will go a long way toward helping with those missions.
Jay: That’s definitely an honorable use of the funds. We’re so excited to be able to help you with that mission.
So grants like this are obviously important because every little bit counts. That means you’re always looking for people to donate and help. What is the best way for someone to learn more about your mission, and find out more about the Michigan Nurses Foundation?
Jessica: Yeah. So you can visit us online to learn more at the Michigan Nurses Foundation website. If you’re looking to donate to the Michigan Nurses Foundation, that can be done on our site as well.
If you know somebody who is in nursing in the state of Michigan looking for scholarships, recovery grants, or education stipends, they certainly can apply directly online as well.
Jay: That’s awesome. Jessica, Ted and Jamie, thank you for taking some time out of your day to join me. And thank you for everything you are doing to support our heroes in need.
To those who are tuning in, thank you for joining us to hear more about the Michigan Nurses Foundation and its mission of service and support nurses in the state of Michigan.
